When faced with the prompt to talk about a character I love, I was overwhelmed with the options I had in mind. I could have gone with so many of my beloved characters from various franchises, but at the end of the day, I decided to settle on Kirby from the Nintendo games of the same name.

What I love about Kirby is his* simplicity of the design. A round pink ball, two blue eyes, a mouth, little nubs for hands and red feet. For such a simply designed character, so much is relayed to the audience through his appearance. The small rounded shapes portray the innocence and pure heartedness of Kirby, how he, just like his design, is not supposed to be complicated. Kirby is just a silly little ball with hands and feet, and because of this, it allows for a lot of fun experimentation in different forms he can take when he absorbs an enemy’s ability.
His basic design both communicates that he is a simple character that has generic positive motivation, and also allows for the game designers and animators to really push and exaggerate his form for many amusing elements.
*(or its, as Kirby is genderless in the original Japanese translation)
