Herring Concept Doodles

For my character design project, I really wanted to re-work my old characters from my very early animation days, of Tang and Pike, the little yellow and blue fishers. But while I was changing them, I was encouraged to create a brand new character, so I decided to design a character that looks like he could fit in with the other two in the same world or show. Tang is primarily yellow with a very round shape language, Pike is primarily blue with a sharp triangular shape language, so I decided to go with something that would compliment and contrast those existing ideas.

Character Lineup Concept

The concept for my character, following the naming convention of the other characters I've made for projects like these in the past, is named Herring, akin to the fish of the same name with the simular red hue. He's a fisher like the other two, and is their boss and captain of their ship. He's strong and sturdy, and dependable, always there for his employees when they're in trouble. While he means well, often he sends his employees on wild goose chases, as he believes in old sailor tall tales fervently and hopes to find creatures of legends or riches to maybe get the funds to keep their foundering fishing business afloat.
